Wooden Grapes in a Stainless Steel Bowl

oil on masonite
5"x5.5"

I've been through a bit of a rough patch with my work over the past week. Am I the only painter out there who panics if things don't go well for a week or two? Am I the only one who starts to think, "I'll never do anything any good ever again. My best days are behind me. I might as well give up and get a full time job" ?
Today things went better- I feel optimistic again. Whew!

  1. Thanks Taryn for the visit and kind comments, I'm glad it worked this time. Have you come across Paul Foxton yet? He's at http://www.learning-to-see.co.uk.
Check out his take on the "four phases of learning" I think it might throw some light on your current malaise. Regards, Nick.

  2. no, you're not the only one who thinks that way! I myself have not painted in weeks, because I took on a part-time job with Starbucks, and it's taking so much physical and mental energy that I haven't even thought of painting much. But as I get more comfortable at work, I'm sure I'll get back to painting. Then of course I'll be rusty and very easily discouraged. Hang in there.

  3. Amy! I was wondering what happened to you! I've been hoping to see you back at the easel, but your new job explains everything. Yes, the first few weeks will be a major adjustment and then when you've got the job down pat, I'll look forwards to seeing you post again.
Starbucks ought to be kind of flexible with their hours, right?

  4. Nick,
I've been looking over Paul Foxton's website, and I'm happy to say that I'll be following along with him on his artistic journey. I love stuff like this- artists who put their inner thoughts (worries as well as enthusiasms) out there for us all to read and enjoy along with their lovely work. Thanks!
